We are excited to announce our first event as the GARN African Hub! We hosted an introductory webinar on Rights of Nature and Earth Jurisprudence on 23 August 2022, at 4pm WAT.
What are Rights of Nature and Earth Jurisprudence? Rights of Nature is a growing global movement that recognizes ecosystems, rivers, forests, and other natural entities as having inherent rights – similar to human rights. Earth Jurisprudence takes this further, proposing that human laws should be based on the fundamental laws of nature rather than treating the environment as mere property. This approach has led to groundbreaking legal recognition for rivers like the Whanganui in New Zealand and the Ganges in India, giving them legal personhood and protection.
Our distinguished panelists included Professor Ngozi Unuigbe from the University of Benin in Nigeria, environmental lawyer and author of Wild Law Cormac Cullinan, and GARN Global Director, Natalia Greene, who shared insights on how these concepts are could be applied across Africa.
