Standing behind Motion 055 is a call to recognize and defend the inherent rights of Antarctica, anchoring responsibility beyond resources and geopolitics.
Adopting the motion will establish formal legal representation for Antarctica in forums where decisions impact the well-being of the polar region, ensuring the unique voice of Antarctica is heard and considered in governance and conservation efforts.
Join us in Abu Dhabi this 9 – 12 October at the 2025 IUCN World Conservation Congress
Motion 055 strengthens delivery of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, while reinforcing the Antarctic Environmental Protocol’s recognition of Antarctica’s intrinsic value. It builds on past IUCN resolutions on Antarctica, fisheries, protected areas, and Rights of Nature.
